What decides a note's value
Type and series come first. A large-size note from before 1928 starts in different territory than a 1957 silver certificate, which is common enough that most examples are worth a modest premium over face.
Condition then does most of the rest. Paper is fragile, and a crisp uncirculated note can be worth many times the same note with folds, a pinhole, or a soft corner. Rarity finishes the job, and national bank notes from small Texas towns are where that gets interesting, since some banks issued very few and collectors chase them by charter.
